Noise-cancelling headphones: what to look for
By ClickAndPerk · updated 7 November 2026
- Over-ear or earbuds? Over-ear models usually block more noise and last longer on a charge. Earbuds are smaller and easier to carry.
- Noise-cancelling quality varies a lot between brands and price levels. Look for independent reviews that test it on trains and planes.
- Battery life: 20 to 30 hours is common for over-ear models. Earbuds typically give 5 to 8 hours, plus extra charges from the case.
- Comfort and fit matter most on long journeys. Check the weight and whether the ear cushions can be replaced.
- Calls: if you take calls, check reviews of the microphone in noisy places.
- Timing: flagship models often drop in price when a newer version launches, which can make the previous model a strong deal.
